eCommerce Challenge: Publishing Shipping Rates

Shipping Expense Risk

A number of shipping strategies exist to circumvent the ability to provide real-time shipping rates to customers.  Strategies such as free shipping, flat rate, and tiered pricing (based on cart value) all exist as a means to overcome real-time rate shortcomings.

These strategies can eat into margins given shipping rates are largely based on the route and weight (actual and dimensional). With flat rates, your best hope is to average out the cost of shipping.  On some shipments you’ll make money and on some you’ll lose.  You are simply hoping to break even, but it’s not in your control.

By showing customers real shipping rates at checkout, e-commerce sites are able to limit their shipping expense risk as there will never be any shipping cost surprises.

Cart Abandonment

For items that ship via pallet (LTL), cart abandonment rates will drop significantly as well.  With most LTL shipments, customers add the product to their cart and are then provided with a freight quote the following day.  By presenting your customer with a real-time rate at checkout, cart abandonment can be expected to decrease as customers are more likely to complete the purchase at checkout instead of the next day.

Integrated Shipping Rate Solution

netParcel has overcome the challenge by developing the ability for sites to offer shipping with their own carrier account paired with netParcel’s Rate Publisher at checkout.

How? Products are mapped to netParcel and rates are returned based on the item dimensions, weight and freight class. For small parcels, you can publish the netParcel rates and then process the shipments on our system.  For LTL, you can use netParcel rates or publish your own.
